Anuradapura is known as the sacred city in Sri Lanka as Sanghamitta Theruni the daughter of King Ashoka of Kalinga in India first landed here with the branch of the sacred pipal tree or Sri Maha Bodhisattwa. She came here to spread the religion of Buddhism. The Folk Museum here is situated close to the Archaeological Museum. It displays a range of artefacts illustrative of the rural life of the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.
