The Papier-Mache object over which the Naqashi (Painting) is to be done constitutes the base object, which is made of Papier-Pulp. The process involves manual grinding of waste paper and developing objects out of it as per the market demand. However, the manual grinding is cumbersome and reduces the overall productivity. Further, the value of papier mache products is not due to grinding. It lies in developing different forms out of the mashed pulp.
In order to address the issue of manual grinding, a local entrepreneur, Mohamad Yousuf Najar in Srinagar’s sakhta locality has developed a grinder and is providing service of grinding to most of the sakhta artisans in the locality. The innovation has increased the productivity of the sakhta practitioners.
