The Uppada Jamdani Sari, a masterpiece of Indian handloom craftsmanship, hails from Uppada in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Renowned for its lightweight texture and reversible designs, where intricate patterns are visible on both sides, this sari exemplifies elegance and precision. Crafted using the ancient “ani butta” Jamdani weaving technique, it involves painstaking handwork by two or three weavers using the finest silk and pure zari. The technique was introduced to Uppada in the 1940s by weavers inspired by Dhaka’s famed Jamdani tradition, adapting the intricate weft patterning to create a unique style. Distinguished by its airy feel, exquisite floral and geometric motifs, and minimalist gold-bordered designs, the Uppada Jamdani Sari has evolved from weaving talapagas and angavastrams to becoming a cultural icon in Indian saris.
