Satin Tanchoi Weaving of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Craft Revival Trust

Woven originally in Gujarat where the technique of weaving Tanchoi saris was brought to India from China by the three Choi brothers; from where the tradition derived its name the Tanchoi sari is now a Varanasi specialty.

Evolved over time to be a amalgam of Chinese and Indian styles of weaving, historical accounts note of beautifully intricate borders and pallus/ end-peice of the Varanasi Tanchoi’s. Minute and intricate designs in muted elegant colors that have been interwoven in a satin weave is the mark of a Tanchoi. Designs are made with weft yarns while the warp yarn make the ground of the sari.

The Tanchois popularity and versatility has extended beyond the sari to textile lengths, scarves and stoles.
