Mangalagiri Saris and Fabrics of Andhra Pradesh

Mangalagiri Sarees and Fabrics are made in Mangalagiri, a town in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district. The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999 registered it as a handicraft in the geographical indication. The Mangalagiri fabric is made by weaving with pitlooms from combed thread and interlacing the warp and weft. The dyeing procedure is then applied to the cloth. Another distinguishing feature of the fabric is the Nizam influence. According to some inscriptions found in this region, weaving has been practised for as long as 400 years during Qutub Shahi’s reign, when a significant number of weavers were migrating to Mangalagiri.
