Khadi Weaving of Maharashtra

Khadi weaving is the use of hand-spun yarn to create hand-woven fabric. Cotton is hand-spun on a traditional charkha (spinning wheel). The process is labor-intensive and requires a high degree of skill and patience. The Khadi fabric is considered to be a luxury item and is highly prized for its beauty and craftsmanship. The fabrics are used for making sarees, dhotis, and other garments. The khadi fabrics are also used to make home textiles such as bed sheets, pillow covers and table clothes. The craft is usually done by men and women of rural areas in Maharashtra, and it is considered as a cultural heritage of the region. Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement, was a strong advocate of khadi and encouraged its use as a symbol of national self-reliance.
