Date Palm Leaf and Fibre of Telangana

Craft Revival Trust

A large number of artisans work on the date palm leaf craft in Barkas, Hyderabad. The huge Palm leaves are harvested from a Palm Tree. These leaves are dry in the sun for 2 to 3 days after being collected. Each leaf is then divided into three or four leaves using a splitting tool, which is normally a sharp knife on a wooden stand. These leaves are then coloured depending on the pattern and other specifications. Following the dyeing process, the leaves are sun-dried once more before being used to make the desired goods. Palm leaves are commonly used to make containers, boxes, trays, stationary objects, and assorted items such as laundry bins, purses, coasters, rattles, toy boxes, agarbatti (incense) boxes, bottle holders, and so on. Several rural societies practise the craft of creating highly glamorous and decorative objects out of Palm leaves.
