Brass and Copper Craft/Tambaat kaam of Kutch, Gujarat

Cooking vessels made from iron, copper and brass are found in almost all kitchens of Gujarat. These materials have been known for their anti-bacterial and medicinal properties. Copper ghadas, which are water containers are used in almost al households because of their purifying properties of the vessel. The handi (vessel for cooking and serving), kadai (wok), laddles, spoons all come in various sizes and are used as staple cutlery.

Originally associated with the sacred and later classified as a science, the trade of shaping metal belongs to the Kansara community. They mold brass into a variety of vessels by alternately heating and hammering metal sheets. The hammer strokes leave behind patterned indentions, enhancing the texture. Since brasswork involves hard physical labor, it is only practiced by men. Women usually polish the metal objects with tamarind to increase shine.
